How to use the image format converter
iPhone HEIC photos that will not open on Windows or on a submission site, or a WebP image you cannot put into a document, need a format change. This tool converts many images at once to JPG, PNG or WebP. Conversion happens inside your browser, so your photos are never uploaded to a server.
Which format should you choose?
- JPG: the most widely used photo format, opened by almost every program and site. The default choice for submissions and printing.
- PNG: lossless and supports transparency. Good for logos, screenshots and text-heavy images, but files are large for photos.
- WebP: smaller than JPG at the same quality, so it suits web pages. Some older programs cannot open it.
Converting iPhone HEIC photos
By default iPhones save photos in the compact HEIC format. Windows and some shopping or government submission sites cannot read it, so it has to become JPG.
When you choose a HEIC file, it is first decoded to JPG and then saved in the format you picked. If a HEIC file contains several images, only the main one is converted.
What changes during conversion
JPG and WebP are lossy, so each conversion costs a little quality. Convert once from the original whenever possible. Turning a transparent PNG into JPG fills the transparent area with white or the color you pick. Converting does not keep EXIF and GPS information.
Camera info and location are not kept when converting. Keep your originals separately. HEIC conversion can take a while in some browsers.
