EXIF / Metadata Remover

Safely strip EXIF, GPS location, and IPTC metadata from your photos right in your browser. Process multiple files at once and download them as a ZIP.

Remove Metadata

This tool never uploads your photos to a server — everything happens in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

Supported formats: JPEG, PNG, WebP. HEIC (iPhone's default format) and TIFF aren't supported yet.

About this tool

Photos often carry hidden EXIF metadata — camera model, shooting settings, the date and time taken, and sometimes even the exact GPS location where the photo was captured. Stripping this before sharing a photo online prevents unwanted personal information from leaking out. This tool removes only the metadata sections at the byte level without re-compressing the image's pixel data, so there's zero quality loss. Everything runs in your browser — your photos are never sent to a server.

What gets removed and how

The tool does not re-compress your image. It cuts out only the parts of the file that hold metadata, at the byte level, and copies the pixel data through unchanged, so quality does not change at all.

In JPEG it removes the APP1 segment (EXIF and XMP), the APP13 segment (IPTC) and text comments (COM), while leaving the JFIF header and the ICC color profile so colors stay the same. In PNG it removes text chunks (tEXt, zTXt, iTXt), the EXIF chunk and the modification-time chunk (tIME). In WebP it removes the EXIF and XMP chunks.

How to use it and the options

  • Supported formats are JPEG, PNG and WebP. You can add several files at once, process them, and download them one by one or as a ZIP.
  • "Remove GPS location only" deletes just the GPS coordinates in JPEG and keeps camera model, lens and shooting settings. Some editing tools also copy GPS into XMP, so for guaranteed location removal turn this off and use full removal.
  • "Remove IPTC" is on by default. Turn it off if you want copyright information to stay attached to the photo.
  • Before processing, the tool shows whether each photo has camera info or GPS, so you can see what will be removed.

When to use it

Use it before posting to social media, a blog or a marketplace to keep the location of photos taken near your home from leaking out. It is also useful before submitting photos to a stock site or a client when you want to tidy up equipment and settings information.

Limits and common mistakes

  • HEIC and TIFF are not supported. Convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPEG first.
  • The tool does not remove what is visible in the picture, such as faces, signs or license plates. It removes metadata only.
  • Some social networks strip metadata on upload, but this varies by service, so removing it yourself first is safer.
  • Your original stays untouched and you download a new file. Check the result before deleting the original.
  • Everything happens in your browser and your photos are never sent to a server.

Guides that pair well with this tool

HEIC (iPhone's default photo format) and TIFF aren't reliably supported by standard browser APIs yet, so they're not included. Convert those to JPEG first (from your phone or camera's settings) if you need to use this tool on them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are my photos really never uploaded anywhere?+

Correct. Everything runs as JavaScript inside your own browser — it reads and rebuilds the file locally with no network request involved. You can verify this yourself in your browser's developer tools Network tab.

Does removing metadata reduce photo quality?+

No. This tool doesn't re-compress the image at all — it only cuts out the byte ranges where metadata is stored, leaving the original pixel data completely untouched.

I want to remove just the GPS data but keep the camera info.+

Turn on the 'Remove GPS location only' checkbox in Advanced Options — for JPEG files, this strips just the GPS coordinates while leaving camera model, lens, and shooting settings intact.
