Long exposure photography turns camera shake from a minor annoyance into the single most common reason a shot fails. At a shutter speed of 1/200s, small vibrations barely register; at 10 seconds, they're stretched out across the entire frame and show up as soft, smeared detail that no amount of sharpening in editing can fully recover. Most of the fixes are cheap and mechanical, not expensive gear.
Why It Matters More at Slow Shutter Speeds
Any movement that happens while the shutter is open gets recorded as part of the exposure. A fast shutter speed freezes vibration because it's over before the movement has time to travel far; a slow shutter speed has nowhere to hide it. This is why a setup that looks perfectly stable to the eye can still produce a soft image — vibrations too small to see or feel are often large enough to blur a 10-second exposure.
Tripod Fundamentals
A stable tripod is the foundation, but "stable" means more than just standing upright. Extend the thicker upper leg sections before the thinner lower ones, since thinner sections flex more under load. Skip the center column extension if you can, or keep it as short as possible, since it's typically the least rigid part of the whole setup. On soft ground (sand, mud, snow), press the legs down firmly to seat them rather than letting them balance on the surface. If your tripod has a hook under the center column, hanging a weight (a bag, a water bottle) from it adds stability, especially in wind.
Mirror and Shutter Vibration
DSLRs have a mechanical mirror that flips out of the way before each shot, and that motion alone can introduce a small amount of shake, especially in the fraction of a second right after the mirror moves. Mirror lock-up (or an electronic first curtain shutter mode, where available) separates the mirror flip from the actual exposure, giving vibrations time to settle before the shutter opens. Mirrorless cameras don't have this specific issue but can have their own shutter-shock equivalent at certain shutter speeds, which an electronic shutter mode eliminates entirely.
Remote Triggering
Physically pressing the shutter button transmits a small amount of shake directly into the camera, and at long shutter speeds that's often enough to soften the shot. A wired or wireless remote avoids touching the camera at all. Without one, your camera's 2-second self-timer works nearly as well — it gives any vibration from pressing the button time to die out before the exposure actually starts.
Wind and Ground Vibration
A tripod eliminates hand shake but not external vibration. Wind pushing against the camera and lens, especially with a large lens or a lens hood acting like a sail, can shake the whole setup enough to blur a long exposure. Positioning yourself to block wind with your body, keeping the tripod low and legs spread wide for a lower center of gravity, and avoiding surfaces that transmit vibration (a wooden dock with foot traffic, a bridge with passing cars) all help. On a windy day, a heavier tripod genuinely outperforms a lighter one.
Image Stabilization: Turn It Off
This one surprises people: in-lens or in-body image stabilization, designed to counteract handheld shake, can actually introduce blur when the camera is on a stable tripod. Some stabilization systems, with nothing to correct, generate small movements of their own trying to detect motion that isn't there. Most manufacturers recommend disabling stabilization for tripod work; check your specific system, since some newer models detect tripod use automatically and don't have the problem.
A Quick Pre-Shot Checklist
Before triggering a long exposure, run through it: tripod legs seated firmly on solid ground, center column kept short, mirror lock-up or electronic shutter enabled, remote trigger or self-timer set, image stabilization off, and a body position that blocks wind if it's present. It takes a few seconds and eliminates the majority of long-exposure blur before it ever happens.
