RAW vs. JPEG: Which Should You Shoot?

Every camera offers a choice between RAW and JPEG somewhere in its menu, and most beginners leave it on JPEG without ever knowing there was a decision to make. Understanding what each format actually does changes how you think about the trade-off.

What the Two Formats Actually Store

A JPEG is a finished photo. The camera takes the raw sensor data, applies white balance, contrast, sharpening, noise reduction, and color rendering according to its internal processing settings, then compresses the result into a small, universally readable file. Once that processing happens, the original sensor data is discarded — you're left with the camera's interpretation, permanently baked in.

A RAW file is the sensor data itself, largely untouched. White balance, contrast, and color rendering are stored as instructions rather than applied changes, which means you can revisit and change every one of those decisions later in editing software without any loss of quality, because you're still working from the original capture rather than a processed copy of it.

The Case for JPEG

JPEGs are smaller, faster to write to the memory card, and viewable on literally any device without conversion. If you're shooting fast-moving action and need your camera's buffer to clear quickly between bursts, or you need to hand a client finished images with no editing step in between, JPEG's built-in processing is doing useful work for you rather than getting in your way. For casual shooting where you're happy with what the camera produces straight out of the box, there's no real cost to staying on JPEG.

The Case for RAW

RAW earns its size and complexity back the moment something in the shot needs correcting. A slightly wrong white balance, an underexposed shadow that needs recovering, or a highlight that's nearly but not quite clipped are all easy fixes in a RAW file and often impossible to fix well in a JPEG, because the JPEG has already thrown away the data those corrections would draw on. This matters most in situations where getting the exposure and white balance exactly right in-camera is difficult: mixed lighting, high-contrast scenes, anything shot in a hurry.

RAW also matters more as your editing skill grows. A beginner who barely touches sliders won't notice much difference; a photographer doing deliberate color grading or exposure blending will run into JPEG's limits quickly.

The Real Cost: File Size and Workflow

A RAW file typically runs 20–80MB depending on your camera's resolution, compared to a few megabytes for a JPEG. That difference compounds fast — a day of shooting can fill a memory card, and a year of RAW files can consume terabytes of storage. RAW files also require a compatible editing program to view and process properly; you can't just email one to someone and expect them to open it the way they would a JPEG. If storage space or editing time is genuinely tight, that cost is worth weighing honestly rather than assuming RAW is always the better default.

The Middle Ground: RAW + JPEG

Most cameras can record both formats simultaneously for every shot, at the cost of roughly doubling your storage use per frame. This is a reasonable default for anyone still deciding: you get an instantly shareable JPEG for casual use, and a RAW file sitting alongside it in case a particular shot turns out to need more correction than the JPEG can offer. It's the safest option when you're not yet sure which files you'll actually want to edit.

Which Should You Choose?

If you already know you'll edit your photos and want maximum flexibility in exposure and color, shoot RAW. If you want files that are ready to use immediately and don't plan to edit much, JPEG is a legitimate choice, not a compromise. And if you're not sure yet, RAW+JPEG lets you defer the decision without losing anything, at the cost of extra storage.
